Hotel Description

Die Port van Cleve is a 4 star hotel perfectly located in the heart of Amsterdam directly behind the Royal Palace on the Dam Square. At this beautiful location surrounded by canals near the shopping and entertainment centers you can enjoy the real Dutch atmosphere. The hotel is housed in a landmark 18th Century building with a rich history. In fact, the building was originally the first brewery of the Heineken beer. After the renovation a couple of years ago, Die Port van Cleve was reopened by Mr. A.H. Heineken, President Director of Heineken Holding and grandson of Mr. G. A. Heineken - who founded the Heineken company right where "Die Port van Cleve" is located now. The hotel features 112 bedrooms with bath/shower, toilet, Cable and Pay TV, hairdryer and telephone for direct calls. Non-smoking rooms, rooms with minibar, trouser press and modem connection are available on request. In Brasserie "de Poort" you can try the famous numbered steaks and get your own numbered certificate. Get the "real Dutch" feeling in Bar/Bodega "De Blauwe Parade", surrounded by genuine Delft Blue tiles. In the peaceful and modern Corner Bar "de Hooiberg", you can watch whole Amsterdam pass by. The genuine "Regentenzaal" conference hall with its old wooden beams, warm and friendly atmosphere has seats for 45 persons. Buffet breakfast, all taxes and service charges are included in the quoted rate.

very good hotel one room was excellent but the other was poor, both had been upgraded to executive rooms, but the breakfast was good and the location brilliant.

The location is excellent and the bar attached to the hotel is outstanding. My only words of warning are that not all rooms have mini-bars and its not possible to open the windows in the rooms at the front. The rooms at the front seem to be twice the size of the first room we were given at the back. However there is no air conditioning in the rooms - just a desk fan - and the room got very hot so it was hard to sleep.

The hotel rooms are very small. The toilettes smelled really bad, but dispite my notifications nothing was done about it the whole time I was there (two nights). The staff told me there was no place to have a drink around the hotel after 1am, even though I found one just across the street. When I asked for drinks from room service (there is no mini-bar), I had to call twice (half an hour apart), even though I said I was in a hurry. In conclusion, you pay much too much ($195 for a double room with breakfast)for this hotel, which has nothing to offer except being very central. It was a very disappointing experience.

Overall, I would say that the hotel met my expectations. The staff was friendly and helpful. The food and service at the restaurant is good, if maybe a bit pretentious. And the hotel location is excellent, within walking distance to almost everything you'd want to see in Amsterdam. For a fairly new 4-star hotel, I expected the rooms to be a bit nicer, though there was nothing wrong with my room. It was clean and everything in it worked fine. As for a previous review about privacy: I put the "Do Not Disturb" sign out almost every night and was able to sleep late without being disturbed by the housekeeping staff. My room was always cleaned by mid-afternoon even when I slept til 10AM. I would recommend this hotel for someone who wanted a central location and was not picky about a luxurious room. But I don't know what other hotels at a similar price point are like.

This was a very comfortable hotel. The desk staff and restaurant staff were extremely pleasant and responsive. The food was good, and the location was excellent. My one complaint: the housekeeping staff were somewhat loud and inattentive to the needs of privacy of guests.
